Brokerage Waiver on MCX Electricity Futures

Dear All,

We hope that you’ve had a wonderful start to the new year! 2025 was a momentous year for commodities as exchange volumes and retail participation soared.

At Dhan, we saw a significant jump in transacting users, especially in Crude Oil, Gold, Silver, and Natural Gas. While retail continues to add commodities to its portfolio, participation is no longer limited to traditional metals and energy alone.

2025 was all about the introduction of newer instruments for Commodity Traders. These instruments are designed to give a trader the ability to diversify their capital into newer, previously unexplored categories. One such category was Electricity.

Driven by industrial demand, peak-load cycles, and real-world consumption patterns, electricity reflects the economy in its most immediate form.

Building on this, Electricity Futures has enabled traders to engage with electricity as an exchange-traded instrument through standardized, regulated contracts.

  • India’s installed electricity capacity has crossed 500 GW, making it one of the largest power markets globally.

  • Electricity demand in India continues to scale with industrial growth, urbanisation, and peak-load consumption cycles.

  • Electricity Futures were introduced in July 2025 in India, making electricity a tradable, exchange-regulated commodity.

  • Electricity Futures are cash-settled, monthly base-load contracts, benchmarked to day-ahead market prices.

  • The contracts are SEBI-regulated and designed to bring transparency and price discovery to electricity markets.

  • Electricity Futures reflect real-time economic activity, linking consumption patterns directly with market pricing.

Since this is a highly innovative and new category for the Indian markets, we endeavour to bring it to a wider audience and increase participation. To that end, we are happy to announce that Electricity Futures will be brokerage-free on Dhan!

This is still an early market, and early markets deserve room to be explored, understood, and tested with freedom. You can explore Electricity Futures on Dhan Charts, Options Trader by Dhan, and of course, Dhan App & Web.

Best,

Jay Prakash Gupta
