In the last 25 years, Nifty has seen a gap-up open of over 4% only a handful of times:
• 1 Mar 1999 (+5.45%)
• 3 Mar 1999 (+4.98%)
• 7 Apr 2020 (+4.48%)
• 13 May 2020 (+4.22%)
• 3 Feb 2026 (+4.80%)
Days like these are rare.

On days like this, with those massive gaps, I can’t help but remember a story I once heard from the founder of Zerodha ( written on the blog, I think ). Back when he was a dealer at a brokerage, a friend of his hit a huge gap-up on Nifty and won the biggest jackpot of his life. But the wild part is—he eventually lost it all over the following months and years, simply by staying in the game.
Making money in the stock market is one thing. Holding on to it and continuing to grow it is another altogether. After all, no one wants to become Jesse Livermore in their own market journey.
We’ve seen black swan events, this was the “white swan event” in the recent times for sure! as you mentioned, days like these are Rare!!
