Introducing Margin Trading Facility (MTF) on Dhan: Now Trade with Less 💰

We understand that as traders, the most important thing for you when you trade is to make money - and more important thing to do is minimise your capital while you trade. Less money you bring, the less is your risk - it’s that simple.

We worked with Traders and understand their needs, with that over time we have transparently brought on multiple products & features for you with respect to Trading & Margin -

Pledge on Dhan is instant and selling & un pledged is in-line which means you do not have to first un pledge and then sell. And only on Dhan we show you the real-time value of Pledge Benefit.

For Intraday traders, Dhan also provides you up to 5X intraday leverage on 850+ stocks; more features like industry first Transaction Estimator (Now Live on Dhan - Transaction Estimator - Product Announcements 🔈 - MadeForTrade), Basket Orders with Hedge Benefit, and introducing the margins for quick reference on all the scrips on Dhan.

We understand that for traders, beyond the ones mentioned above there could be multiple opportunities to trade, specially for Swing Traders, Short Term Investors or BTST Traders. There are times when your funds are blocked in existing positions and you spot an opportunity in the markets or you simply want to use leverage to increase the potential returns from a trade. In such scenarios, margins are the go to product and now we take a step further to make trading even more fruitful with Margin Trading Facility (MTF) on Dhan.

Introducing: Margin Trading Facility (MTF) on Dhan. Now available on Dhan Web & App

MTF stands for Margin Trading Facility (commonly referred to as Margin Funding) wherein when you have to trade / invest, you bring in part of the funds of the trade (known as your margin) and the stock broker (in this case Dhan) brings in the remaining funds on behalf of you - so that you can by the desired shares with lower margins / capital required from your end. Note: The exchange always requires the full capital, so Dhan arranges for the same in this case for a smaller interest amount.

Now, once purchased you can hold these stocks for as long as you want till the margins are provided by Dhan. MTF as a investing / trading product is particularly built keeping in mind the interest of :

  • Equity Swing traders

Product @ Dhan

Interest of 16% a year, difficult to generate that return from markets on bigger capital but great feature nonetheless

Good to see you back on community after a while @doubles.

As a business - we will never compete on pricing, we focus on building a better product & customer experience in everything we do.

For a business, the cost of capital today varies from 14-18% depending on its source - either from a bank or NBFC. It’s more or less public data, you will see it on many places, here’s one of references:

We spend a lot every month in product, technology and infrastructure. Have shared my personal views on broking industry and pricing here: Stock Broking Industry: Some perspective on Pricing / Brokerage & Way Forward | being practical

If the cost of funds become lower, we will pass on the benefit to our users.

@PravinJ Can you clarify the following?

  • MTF will help us to buy stocks with only 25% fund in our account. The stocks which are bought can be pledged and the pledged collateral can be used for trading in options. Is that right?

  • Suppose if I buy a stock today and sell it after 10 days. What will be the approximate interest rate? I am assuming interest will be calculated for 8 days (as interest calculation starts after T+2 days). So it will be (0.046% * 8 * fund allocated by Dhan)

Hi Stanly,

MTF is already a leveraged product & pledged product, it can’t be pledged further. Its the other way, if you have a pledge stock against which you have a margin benefit - you can buy stocks on MTF with that… provided all rules of cash + collaterals are met.

Yes, your calculation is correct. Please check the settlement of stock, they are now T+1 and T+2 as well.

Suppose I buy an stock on T+2 settlement. I have funds of Rs 10,006.96 and dhan funded me Rs 28,976.14 Now i want to sell it after 10 days !!

Interest will be calculated as 0.0438% x 8 x 28,976.14 = Rs 101.53

Am i correct ?

Hey @Pradhan ,

Yes, your calculation is correct. Interest will start getting charged on funded amount post T+2 days in your case.

Two Queries:

  1. What about Pledge charges (is it12.5 per transaction + GST ) ?
  2. I believe I must mark the transaction as ’ MTF ’ on the same day after 4:00 PM or after T1- T3 ?

Hi @suhasg

A pledge and un-pledge charge of ₹ 12.5 /transaction / ISIN + GST each is applicable.

Pledge your holdings anytime between 4 PM - 9 PM on the same day with Dhan.

Hi @GalaticX,

We are working on your concern, and will revert you on your registered email id.

I bought some shares of VBL using MTF on Friday, planning to sell it on monday, a BTST trade.
But I am not able to sell or even place limit order in any tabs stating insufficient fund.?

Hey @Abdunafih ,

A margin of 20% is required as per exchange norms in case of BTST trades. Could you confirm if you have maintained that?

No I didn’t maintain that. I mailed the customer support and they also pointed it out.
Thanks for the reply.

Abdu Nafih

Suppose i have 10k and after selecting mtf i got 30k extra total 40k so the daily interest of 0.043% i need to pay on 10k or 30k or 40k

You will be charged interest on the funded amount only, in this case 30K.

I cannot find the option to convert from MTF to delivery.

This is on our list of things to do. Meanwhile, please share this request via your registered email to

16% is too much, please lower the rates with respect to your competitors.

Hello, a great feature indeed. A query:
How to place bracket orders (BO) in margin trading facility (MTF)?
