Arbitrage Trading between NSE & BSE - the opportunities rarely exists!

Saw social media post on this topic and thought to put down some notes.

No matter how exciting this sounds on the paper, that is arbitrage trading - find price differences between both exchanges and make a trade, say buy that on NSE and sell it on BSE (or vice versa) - these don’t come up that easily and are extremely rare. Some reasons for that..

  • There may be some real and meaningful differences between spot prices on the two exchange, at some time in the day - say it is ~1%, what isn’t factored is the transaction costs - which includes brokerage, exchange charges, etc, etc. Post these charges, the only one not making money is the trader!
  • Yes, now you get it. It is good for brokers, but not good for you!
  • Liquidity differences, the transaction volumes between BSE and NSE are way to disproportionate. On Dhan, we allow you see this exchange wise in the Markets section. So you may enter one side of the transaction, but may get stuck in execution on the exit leg.
  • To capture arbitrage, you have need entry and exit legs, well at least the exit leg on a limit prices. Low liquidity on exhchanges, either of it - will reduce the possibility of trade execution.
  • Price ticks between exchanges earlier were 0.05 paisa, so on small stocks the difference in spot prices would be considerable in % terms. However now the tick has been reduced to 1 paisa or 0.01. So the arbitrage opportunities have shrunk even further.

Trading opportunities don’t come that easy with exchange arbitrage
