Guess the company #3 - Of needles, bicycle saddle, firearms and a now listed company

Hello,

I am back with another guess the company and trust me this one is mind-blowing!

Here is the hint

At one point 90% of the world’s needles were made by a company in a city which is also the birth city of the famous singer Harry Styles. In 1862, the founder’s son pivoted from making needles to bicycles saddles and many products. Unfortunately, the bicycle business did not do well and was taken over by new management. Under the new management, there were two businesses - bicycle making and making parts for firearms.

There was one more Indian company, that imported cycles to India owned. This Indian company had partnership with the needle making company (remember they pivoted?). One of the pivots was motorised transport vehicles. They even did a trial from London to Edinburgh.

Our then Prime Minister Mr. Nehru was keen to get this to India and thus the needle making company licensed the Indian company to make the product in India. They partnered and the factory was setup in Tiruvottiyur, near Madras. The needle making company then setup a factory in a small town in Middlesex that also is the brand name. This brand has the longest running production (120 years).

It was acquired by the listed parent company in 1994.

PHEW, this was tough. Take your best guess

  1. Needle Making in Redditch: The riddle begins by describing a company that was initially involved in needle manufacturing and was based in the birth city of Harry Styles, which is Redditch, England. Redditch was historically known for its needle industry.
  2. Pivot to Bicycle Saddles and Other Products: The company mentioned transitioned from making needles to other products, including bicycle saddles. This fits the history of Royal Enfield, which started with needles and later expanded into other products including bicycles.
  3. Struggles and Diversification: The mention of the bicycle business struggling and then moving into making parts for firearms also aligns with the history of Royal Enfield, which did indeed diversify into such areas.
  4. Indian Connection and Motorized Transport: The connection to India through the importation of cycles and subsequent partnership to manufacture motorized transport vehicles fits the narrative of Royal Enfield motorcycles being manufactured in India after a partnership formed between the UK-based company and Madras Motors in India.
  5. Involvement of Indian Prime Minister Nehru: Prime Minister Nehru’s interest in promoting industrial and technological development in India supports the historical engagement between Royal Enfield and the Indian manufacturing scene.
  6. Factory in Middlesex: The reference to a factory set up in Middlesex in a town that shares its name with the brand points directly to Royal Enfield. The town and brand name being the same further corroborates this connection.
  7. Longest Running Production: Royal Enfield boasts one of the longest continuous production runs for motorcycles, which began in 1901.
  8. Acquisition in 1994: Royal Enfield was acquired by the Eicher Group in 1994, which fits the final clue of the riddle about the acquisition by a listed parent company.
