Know Dhan: Understanding Traffic on Stock Trading Platforms like Dhan

Hi All,

At Dhan we focus a lot on product, technology and customer experience. We are not your traditional or bank owned or discount brokers. Within our teams and our interactions we end up mentioning this to ourselves - we are bunch of folks passionate about product, tech and customer experience - who happen to be in Stock Trading & Investing business.

I had also given a glimpse of our transaction processing capabilities here: https://twitter.com/BeingPractical/status/1742767060420362661. On our community, I recently mentioned about everything we have done to scale our infrastructure and technology stack in 2023 here: Dhan: Update on scaling up our Technology Stack, Network and Infrastructure - Product Announcements πŸ”ˆ - MadeForTrade.

We continue to give to glimpse here on technology at Dhan works behind the radar to our users. Here is a sneak preview of traffic on our trading systems below:

Things you will notice following patterns:

  • Surge in users, almost 20X from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM
  • Peak times when traders log-in to our systems is between 9:45 AM to 11:30 AM
  • This may be just on Dhan, exactly post 3:00 PM many traders start switching off for the day.
  • Dhan already contributes significant volumes for Commodity Trading, for that we continue to see very high users on our platforms until 11:30 PM.
  • Currency Traders continue to be active till 4:30 to 5:00 PM, most of them prefer carrying overnight positions
  • Traders are on Dhan systems 24 x 7, yes even on late Saturday or Sunday nights when world may be partying.

What is not seen on the graphs:

  • When there is a sudden move in the market, the trading activity spikes up as much as 20 to 100 times the usual within just seconds and for the same traffic.
  • Not all users trade, there are many who would come to analyse markets, track positions and portfolios.
  • The blip you see 8:45 AM is when we refresh all our machines (one by one in sequence and within flash of a moment) mandatorily before start of a trading session.
  • Post 4:00 PM we switch off our NSE & BSE systems for Equity & Derivative Markets, rest traffic continues to be served for MCX commodity trading.
  • This isn’t the traffic that you would see in Google Analytics Dashboards, we track that separately. Trading systems get all love, attention and care during trading sessions.

Ps: Our users can also track connectivity of Dhan with exchanges here: https://status-monitor.dhan.co/

What you see above is just users on our trading systems, there are multiple tech stacks internally at Dhan that cater to critical modules like - Connectivity with Exchanges, Front End systems (web and apps), APIs, User Management, Market Analytics, Charting Systems, Onboarding & KYC, Backoffice, Reporting and much more.

I have continued to always mention that Trading systems are one of the most complex technology systems out there. Hope you find this glimpse of tech at Dhan helpful.

Thanks
pj
