Multiple margin types in a single trading account

Currently, the margin in the trading account can be used for both Delivery and FnO. Can we separate the margin types into Equity and Derivatives? The Margin allocated in the Derivatives will be used only for FnO, and similarly for Equity, it will only be used for Etf/Stock for delivery or Intraday. With this, the allocation of capital can be seamless and monitoring each of them will be easy.

Hello @Dhan Do you have plans to provide such a feature on trading margin so that the margin kept in delivery will only be used for equity delivery, and the margin allocated for Derivatives/Intraday will only be used for derivatives and Intraday.

Hello @thisisbanerjee, it’s not just discipline but trader safety. I use Dhan for delivery and derivatives. I don’t want to mix these 2. We can still do it by opening multiple accounts but it’s too tedious. This is a mechanism that can be seen in many crypto exchanges, for eg: Binance, where the margins are isolated based on instrument.

@Dhan @PravinJ, is there a possibility of having multiple margin types within Dhan soon? I use Dhan for both investing and FnO, and it gets difficult to manually track whether the margin is used for FnO or Delivery. Using profits across instruments causes issues, too, and it adds an additional burden of downloading the report from the journal and keeping track of it. If there is an option for margin allocation, then it will be easier to track within the app itself.

Hello @nitishbangera , on Dhan we have a single ledger system, where the margin across all segments becomes available for trading as soon as the funds are settled.

Additionally, we’d be glad to discuss this with you over a call for a clear understanding. Please share your registered contact details at help@dhan.co .

@nitishbangera

ICICI Direct has this feature. It does help a lot with budgeting & segregation of the total margin, into various segments such as Equity, F&O, MTF, Commodities…

Like I say, I want to allot ₹100 to MTF and ₹100 to Equity and ₹100 to F&O and only that much amount will be available for trading in that segment. Helps distribute evenly and prevents spillovers.

A really nice feature, it does help quite a bit with the mental maths and budgeting.

Hello @Madiya_Khatri, I understand it’s a single ledger system, and hence my request is to provide an option for a multi-ledger system which is similar to crypto exchanges. The reason for this request is for better allocation and tracking within the app for Equity Delivery and Derivatives. As mentioned in my first comment, if there is an option for margin types for Equity delivery and Derivatives, the margin allocated to that type can only be used for that instrument. Currently, I do it through a custom program written specifically for portfolio and margin tracking.

Scenario:
Funds Transferred to Dhan: 1,00,000
Margin allocated to Equity Delivery(50%):50,000
Margin allocated to Futures and Options(50%): 50,000

I make sure that I can only buy Equity worth 50,000 and not more. Similarly, my option and future trading margin shouldn’t go beyond 50,000. If there is a Profit and loss in their respective segment, the margin allocated is added or subtracted accordingly.

I will share my details over at the email ID provided to discuss this feature further.

@thisisbanerjee Thank you very much for the reference. This is amazing to know that it’s already been implemented in Stock and Index trading platforms. Till now, I have seen it implemented only in Crypto exchanges, for eg: Binance.

Hello @Pranita @Dhan, Can you please share some updates on the evaluations that the team is doing for this request? It would be good if we have a way of tracking these feature requests so that its not lost.
